About:

I got deeply involved with photography way back in my high school days, photographing sports for the local paper and various other projects. I then studied commercial photography formally for a time at Art Center College of Design. I found steady work in several Hollywood photo labs while pursuing my own photography. While I no longer depend on photography for an income, I still have the same fascination with light, color, design and frozen story elements that originally captivated my interest.

Photography is both creative and technical. Long experienced in the analog and chemical darkroom, I have given that up in favor of modern and flexible digital methods that allow me to move beyond the limitations of earlier methods—expressive as they were. Working digitally allows full use of panoramic and “high dynamic range” techniques that were difficult, time consuming and expensive with darkroom methods. I like the expanded sense of space and color that these methods add to my photographic expression.

I work with several motifs, favoring historical, industrial and modern architecture, landscapes of the West and occasionally, graphic abstractions. In the landscape, I often photograph vistas with rocks, sand and deciduous trees, signifying long lasting durability as well as striving, youthfulness, fragility and impermanence. A historical texture appeals to me, developing a sense of place and recognizing the imposition of man’s will as well as the effects of time.

A small portfolio of my work is available at Viewpoint Gallery in Sacramento. CA, with a wider range of work on my web site, www.panowest.com.
