Rachel Carlin is an artist who has worked in a variety of media over the last 28 years. She uses her artwork to connect her varied interests.
Rachel often combines her love of the musicians such as the Beatles or Johnny Cash, with her fascination with dinosaurs to create unique scenes. Rachel usually works in watercolors, acrylics, and ceramics, but her illustrative style also easily translates to printmaking, scratch board, sgraffito and mishima techniques.
Rachel is motivated by selling her pieces and sharing her work with the world. She is patient and meticulous in her approach. Rachel starts by compiling and assembling reference images, then roughly tracing the assembled photo-collage in pencil. She adds unseen details and editorializes the images as she goes.
Her finished pieces turn out moody and evocative, much of the detail of the original sketch work is transmuted. Rachel says she makes art because, “The world is too noisy, when I work it goes quiet.”
