Location: Lincoln
Medium: Oil

About:

Marilyn Rose is an artist on a path that has taken many turns over the past twenty-seven years. Born in Palo Alto, California, she showed an aptitude for drawing people early on; however, it remained until mid-life to begin her serious art study. Beginning with basics she studied composition, drawing and painting at Sierra College, she went on to classes and workshops with many top artists in Northern California and beyond. With more than thirty fine instructors in her background Marilyn has developed her own style and voice that combines their solid instruction with her own vision and inspiration.

As a plein air painter for over 15 years, Marilyn learned to create a composition quickly and capture the essence of a scene with rapid brushwork. In 2012 she revisited her early training in still life painting again, and by 2016 she had completed a collection of nearly 50 classical still lifes. Much as she enjoyed this work the real value was that it reopened the door to portraiture.

Marilyn had originally planned a career as a portrait artist, but life put that dream on hold. When she decided in 2016 that it was time for her to get serious about painting portraits, it was a natural progression as she had kept up her study in portrait classes and studio figure sessions. Not satisfied with the traditional poses, she much prefers to capture the movement and emotion of people engaged in activity. Joaquin Sorolla and Anders Zorn are among the artists whose work has inspired her figurative pieces.

In 2017 Marilyn embarked on a new series of impressionistic portraits of musicians, both local and worldwide, and in 2019 she began to include other types of artists such as sculptors, potters and dancers. The series will be shown in September at the Sacramento Fine Arts Center in an exhibit titled “In pursuit of Excellence”.

With three one artist shows, several national, statewide and local group shows, many awards, hundreds of paintings in private collections in the U.S. and the U.K. and over ten years experience teaching oil painting, Marilyn feels her career is well rounded ….yet there are years of study and growth yet ahead of her, and undoubtedly some revelations and surprises along the way.
