Medium: Copper, Fiber Art, Iron Work, Jewelry, Metal Work, Silk, Steel, Textile, and Wearable Art
Barbra has always enjoyed fibers, and silk has become her passion. In finding ways to enhance and display her silk, Barbra tried various materials. She makes beautiful scarves and wraps as well as wall art where she incorporates rustic steel to play with the silk in unique ways, making a striking contrast. The steel is cut freehand with a plasma torch, then woven and welded. She then creates patina finishes to achieve metallic earth tones. The silk is designed and painted with dyes and hung from or woven with the steel with an unusual final design.
Barbra’s glass work began as a complement to the silk as accent pieces for her wearable art. The glass evolved into a life of its own and is combined with copper, brass and steel for jewelry to make beautiful wearable pieces.
Barbra can be found in overalls with sparks flying as she cuts the steel or in the confines of her studio as she paints on pristine white silk. Her work ranges from 18 inches to 20 feet. The stunning silk interacts with earthy coarse steel as the silk shimmers and flows with air movement.
Barbra Paitich studied art at San Jose State University. Silk has been her medium of choice since 1981.
